‘Ulu and Kalo Bakery
Meet Maile Kamisugi of ‘Ulu and Kalo Bakery!
Specialty: Healthful Indulgences (vegan and GF)
How would you describe your business/brand?
Health conscious, quality baked goods made with ʻulu and kalo.
How’d you get started and what sparked the idea for your business?
Upon returning home from college, I had a newfound appreciation for kalo and 'ulu because they are naturally gluten-free, nutrient-dense, and are so versatile to cook/bake with. At that time I also realized I felt better eating gluten-free and realized there werenʻt many options for healthier sweets and decided to combine my interests in health, canoe plants, and baking and created ʻUlu & Kalo Bakery!
What do you wish you had known before you started your business?
Hmm, not sure I wished to have known anything before but I wish I took some trips before I started because now itʻs hard to escape (the matrix) lol.
What are you most proud of about your business?
I'm most proud of how the products have evolved over the years.
What do you love most about being a food entrepreneur?
I love being a food entrepreneur because I love feeding people nourishing things.
What’s one piece of advice you have for other food entrepreneurs?
Everything is figure-out-able! Be patient with yourself and expect a lot of personal growth.
What makes your business unique/special?
My business is unique/special because I use ʻulu and/or kalo in either steamed form or flour form.
What’s your best seller at the moment?
It's a tie between the Kalo Brownies and Banana & 'Ulu Bread.
What do you like about working in Hana Kitchens?
I enjoy Hana Kitchens because of the community of food entrepreneurs.
